Mastic Asphalt

Mastic Asphalt Flooring

Mastic Asphalt is the ultimate protection for a wide range of applications. The primary use of Asphalt is for waterproofing due to its impervious waterproofing qualities.  This is attributed to its high concentration of bitumen and of course bitumen is a by-product of the petroleum refinement.

When exposed to extremely high temperatures, Mastic Asphalt forms a thick liquid substance which can be poured and spread over a surface.

In its many forms mastic asphalt excels in Flooring, Roofing, Tanking and Paving applications where a smooth, seamless, durable surface is required. It acts as a tough working surface and damp-proof membrane in flooring and is ideal for paving, offering a durable wearing surface.

The original Asphalt was often known as Trinidad Asphalt and it was the Architects choice for waterproofing.  It was both durable and flexible and gives many years of service.

What Is Mastic Asphalt Made Of And How Is It Applied?

Mastic asphalt is one of the oldest forms of applied membrane waterproofing and has been used since the 19th century. The process used to make mastic asphalt is very similar to ordinary asphalt in that bitumen is mixed with a composite aggregate and heated to form a thick paste. In the case of mastic asphalt, the aggregate is usually composed of powdered limestone or granite along with other fillers.

The application of mastic asphalt is very simple. Once the mixture reaches a temperature between 180 to 230°C it is then applied and smoothed over the selected area usually by a qualified operative who will use a wooden float similar to what is used by plasterers.

Durable

The first thing to that really stands out about mastic asphalt is its extreme durability. With a lifecycle between 50 to 60 years, mastic asphalt will not require maintenance and will repel water ingress for nearly a lifetime. When using mastic asphalt for driveways you can be sure that once it is laid, it’s there for near enough half a century. Long life spans also mean fewer repeated installation disruption which is an added bonus especially when the material’s application in public locations.

Cost Effective

Mastic asphalt represents true value for money in terms of laying costs, preparation and labour. This means that more people are able to have access to a reliable and durable form of surfacing.

Environmentally friendly

Now more than ever, there is increased focus on the environmental impact of building materials. Amazingly for all the value provided by mastic asphalt, it has minimal impact on the earth! It is non-toxic and is odourless after being laid which ensures no negative impact on wildlife or nature. An added bonus is that mastic asphalt can be recycled once it reaches the end of its life.
